That's right! Tuesday, May 12th 4-7 pm,will be the very first farm stand of the season- we couldn't be more excited. Come celebrate the little squares of remaining green space, say hello, and get some veggies!

Just a heads up that traffic is more terrible than ever, so be patient if you are driving. There is parking on Cook right in front of the farm stand or on Williams before Pizza A Go-Go. You may prefer to walk or bike (the left bike lane and traffic light make for easy and safe stop-bys) if you can.

WORK PARTY AT BLUE HOUSE GREENHOUSE FARM!

If you've been thinking, "Hey, what's it like to work and party at the same time?" Here's your chance.

On Saturday, May 16th we will be getting together to pull weeds, transplant starts from the greenhouse, eat lunch, and enjoy the farm in the full flush of spring. Drop in any time between 9 and 4, and stay for as long as you want. We will provide gloves, tools, and lunch. Please RSVP so we know how much food to bring for lunch.

If you can't make it for the work party, don't worry; we have volunteer drop-in days every Tuesday from 9 until 4 and Saturday from 10 until 2.amanda morsehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04381771064304184805noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6912588269052364888.post-74742914917260890052015-02-09T19:05:00.000-08:002015-02-09T19:05:56.063-08:00farming season has begun!

And here we are again. The beginning of another season at Blue House Greenhouse Farm. I don't think many people (including myself) thought we would be able to keep going at our location as buildings go up and down all around us, but here we are! And we are excited to be here for another year.

What's new this year? Well I am excited to say that there will be a few more folks helping out! I will be partnering with Adam Marx, Gentiana Loeffler, and Christopher Himes. I've learned that it is so much better to spread the work and learn from more brain power. Welcome aboard you three!

The greenhouse fixed and seeds started.

What else? This past Saturday we had our first work party of the season! I am really impressed by the dedication of our volunteers. The forecast was ugly. However the 15 people that attended were rewarded with sun! And a bunch of hard labor. And lunch. I think it was worth it! The lunch itself was worth it. Amy made a salmon quiche and Eileen made focaccia. Adam and Julie made chocolate chip cookies, Gentiana made spicy sweet potatoes, I made a veggie chili, and we had salad greens from the farm.Yum. I am just trying to entice you all to come to the next work party. So the weather and the food were great, and we got so much done! We fixed the greenhouse that was damaged by the wind back in December, cleared a ton of blackberries, made potting soil, started seeds, turned compost, spread wood chips, and things I don't even remember. Thank you to all the folks that came out to help! Stay tuned for more info regarding upcoming work parties and farm related fun. I promise to update more regularly then once every six months.
I hope that you excuse my lack of writing this year. I just noticed it's been over a month and a half since my last post and that one wasn't too informative. Part of the reason for this is that Jeff Ramsey and I, Amanda Morse are getting married! We are really excited and totally overwhelmed by the details of throwing a party, but mostly really excited.

The farm stand (every Tuesday 4-7 pm, right at the farm) is in full spring swing! With all this warm weather plants have really taken off. Peas are in full force, but the stories of the week are kale and chard. You probably know how terrific they both are for you, packed with nutrients and fiber. And they are so versatile to eat! raw, steamed, sauteed, as a wrap for your favorite burrito insides.

This is what I am planning on making this week with kale: http://www.pbs.org/food/fresh-tastes/kale-salad-with-almonds/ Maybe not exactly like that, but something similar.

And this is what I'm going to make with chard: http://paninigirl.wordpress.com/2011/01/10/erbazzone-what-took-me-so-long/

What about you?

Share your spring time recipes in the comments below! Then I can come here when I'm at a loss with 5 lbs of red russian kale.

Starting anew. So to keep with tradition and not start something new: I love beginnings! I love how each year we begin again. Of course I understand that years accumulate and times moves on, but there's a certain beauty to returning back to January, opening a new excel workbook to begin crop planning, perusing the new catalogs, making outlandish to-do lists with every intention of getting it all done. All that hope and promise, I just love it! That's just what I've been doing: ordering seeds, planning new projects, cleaning, organizing, getting ready!

There are a couple of events that I want to share with you:
Consciously Setting Intentions for the New Year with One House of Peace
Sunday February 1st 10 am-5pm
Blue House Greenhouse Farm will be providing a delicious vegetarian lunch for this workshop!
Here is a description from the website:
"Are you hoping to avoid the trap of setting New Year’s goals that will end up forgotten by March? Perhaps you’ve decided to side-step the problem by not setting goals at all? Join us as we reveal how we habitually set goals from a belief that we need to be improved. We don’t – if self-improvement as a practice worked, it would have worked by now. Join us as we transcend this assumption and learn to set intention from a place of consciousness, balance, and compassion. In this workshop we will spend time honoring what we've created in the past, letting go and wiping the slate clean." No doubt about it.

I wish I was better about taking pictures. Then you all could have seen the snow blanketing the farm this past Friday morning. What a sight! We've had some unusually cold temperatures as has much of the west. If you are interested in a detailed account of the weather events in the Pacific Northwest then look no further then the Fox 12 Weather blog.

The crops at the farm are nice and frozen. I won't be able to harvest anymore this year. I do believe that a lot of the crops that are in the ground will pull through and begin to grow again early next year. That's the hope-and that's the best I can do for now.

It's been an incredible season. How lucky I feel.
He and his partner, Carrie have a little one on the way. This is exciting news because all of you who have met Abi, their daughter, know that they make great kids. So be sure to congratulate Devin, Carrie, and Abi next time you see them! The sad part of this news is that Devin won't be able to continue with the farm next season. Although I know Devin loved working at the farm, we know that it isn't the most lucrative of professions nor the most easy on one's body. With a baby on the way, he has to save his time, money, and body for the work ahead.

I just want to spend a moment in appreciation for Devin (I'm sorry, Devin, if it sounds like a eulogy, I know you are very much alive). Devin has been awesome to work with. From the start he was super motivated to take on the farm as a partner. He motivated us to look at what our urban farmer friends are doing, what materials could we build to assist our work, what varieties could we grow to increase our diversity, what other kind of delicious pickles could he make. His love for growing things has always been so clear and evident. Mostly Devin is a pleasure to be around. I think anyone who has met Devin can agree that he is just such an incredible person. He's super kind, thoughtful and so funny. Like the time when a woman at the farm stand said that she wasn't a big pickle fan. Devin responds by saying,"well, luckily we have small pickles!" Too funny. Anyway, I will miss working with him. I know that I will still see him a lot, but I will miss the day to day. Thanks Devin, for all time, labor and heart you've put in the farm. You're the best.

If folks are wondering what the farm will do next year, I am still trying to sort that out but check back in January for what's coming next! In other news, I received a copy of the latest magazine that featured the farm. "Elle la Table." A Japanese foodie magazine!
It's pretty exciting. Check out our new press link for other stories.

We were mentioned in a graphic piece (a piece that is a graphic not that the content is graphic) in the September issue of the Portland Monthly! You can buy this mammoth magazine at many local retailers and the online version will be available next month. For now, I took a couple photos for you to check out.

It's an interesting piece. It's about the "growth spurt" that North Williams Ave has been experiencing in the past year: New Seasons, mixed-use buildings, cute shops. It also mentions why North Williams has all these vacant lots and empty storefronts and it briefly notes that it was a vibrant hub of African American culture and community before the demolition and displacement of most of this community (so brief, it was in parenthesis).

This neighborhood has had an dense history of displacement and gentrification following very clear racial lines. For a complete history of this area, read this paper. Bleeding Albina: A History of Community Disinvestment, 1940-2000. This article from a few years ago from The Skanner gives a good overview. Portland Gentrification: The North Williams Avenue That Was- 1956.

The Portland Monthly piece also mentions that the farm is part of this "re-making" of North Williams. I have mixed feelings about this claim. It wasn't my intention to be a part of the gentrification of this neighborhood. My intention was rather single minded- to find a piece of land in the city to grow food and sell it to our local community. I didn't think of what it could mean for the culture of the neighborhood: a young white woman selling foods for people who care (and can afford to care) about local food. I think the ignorance I had was the same as many young white people, unknowingly moving to affordable areas making them less and less so for the people who originally live there. I also know that this very "re-making" that the farm is a part of will eventually be the un-making of the farm. It is a prime piece of real estate and will most likely end up as another mixed-use building.

As I said, I have mixed feelings- I do think that this neighborhood needs reinvestment. I believe in dense urban housing. I am glad that the New Seasons opened a block away from the farm, because that's where I shop (and the farm now sells to them too, which is exciting). Also it's pretty incredible that an urban farm is seen as reinvestment. But how to "reinvest" without displacing even more of this neighborhood's original community? As you can tell I am confused about this issue and the role of the farm and my own role in this neighborhood. I am open to any thoughts.
I know, you all must be wondering what's been happening! I've also been wondering-it all has been going by so quickly, I'm not totally sure what's happened.

The farm stand has been going super well. (EVERY TUESDAY 4-7 PM)! We've really been having a lot of fun getting to see our regulars and getting to know the newcomers!

We have lots of summer crops and our fall crops are beginning to come on. We had a beautiful garlic and potato harvest. Our tomatoes and cucumbers are crazy prolific. Devin has been making these delicious pickles from our harmonie cucumbers. They are pretty perfect pickles (try saying that fast).
Blue House Greenhouse Farm had it's first farm to table dinner! Kusuma Rao of Ruchikala had 17 guests and made a crazy good Indian-Mexican fusion meal from our produce. We set up tables and chairs around the farm. It wasn't even too loud with traffic because it was Sunday! I think another meal is in the works. I'll be sure to post the next date. Here are some photos from that beautiful day.

For a short while we had goats! Devin has a friend that owns goats who were hungry for fresh greens and we had a blackberry/morning glory/alianthus patch that was out of control. At our last work day, volunteers built a fence and then the goats came and ate. And ate and ate. After a week, they had done such a good job that we tried to move the fence to give them access to more plants to eat. We also happened to give them a way out of the fence. The following day while Devin and I were at our other jobs the goats escaped! Meaning, they were eating grass in the adjoining field. Luckily, our neighbors at the Red Cross and Pizza A Go-Go were around and very sweetly took the time to corral the goats and lead them around the farm, back into their pen. I love our neighborhood. The goats left shortly after for greener (larger) pastures. It was really fun while it lasted!
There is a ton happening on the farm these days. We are in the midst of harvesting and hanging garlic- it's looking really beautiful and delicious! The summer crops are coming in- a variety of cucumbers, grey zucchini, and maxibel french filet beans for starters. You should definitely come see them all at the Farm Stand! We are also getting our fall plantings in slowly. We just transplanted Gonzales cabbage. I know. You are getting excited for cabbage.
And I know you are dying to hear the latest in our bee saga! As some of you may know that our bees died last winter (as I guess many did in Portland, I hear). Our friend, Andy asked to keep his hives at the farm, which is great on it's own. Then one of his hives got a little over populated and what did they do? swarmed! Right into our little persimmon tree. The bees were gently gathered into our little bee box where they are happily living today! What a beautiful story.
Summer, with all it's bright beautiful sunshine. It actually feels like it's been here for a while. Since my time here (this is my fourth spring) it's been pretty cold and rainy through June. But not this year- it's been a beautiful spring! I am getting differing accounts whether or not this is abnormal. I hear that it's been the past three springs that have been abnormal. Well lucky me.
There is so much happening at the farm these days! All of our summer crops are in the ground and being trellised, they are on their way to flowers and fruit. We've put in nine different varieties of tomatoes- San Marzano, Striped Roman, Persimmon, Stupice, Isis, Sungold, Jaunne Flamme, Black Cherry, and I am pretty sure there is one more that I'm forgetting. Also the peppers, squash, basil, beans, and cucumbers are doing great! We are growing some cucumbers in the greenhouse this year- to utilize the space and the warmth. I'll let you know how it turns out.
You have to come, you won't be sorry. What will we have available, you ask? What won't we have available is a better question. ANYWAY what we will have is a whole lot of deliciousness!
Does it ever seem that all of a sudden, life just speeds up? It never ceases to surprise me, each spring that after months of imperceptible growth the plants grow inches in days. Okay, maybe not that fast... but fast nonetheless. Life in general seems to do the same! So here we are trying to hold on as the year moves forward. We have a lot going on at Blue House Greenhouse Farm, as you can imagine. First of all, you can begin preparing yourselves for the reopening of the farm stand which will happen Tuesday, May 7 as always from 4 till 7 pm. Mark your calendars and get your shopping bags ready!

What else? I (Amanda) will be offering a class through Grow Portland, a local non-profit whose mission is to "empower our community to grow healthy food," entitled Vegetable Gardening Basics Workshop! It will be held right on the farm! It's a workshop for the super beginner. Never grown a vegetable before in your life? No problem! We'll discuss site selection, NW soil basics, how to plant seeds and transplants, and so much more. If you want more information or would like to sign up click here.

I also wanted to share pictures from yet another super fun and super productive work party! You really don't want to miss out next time!

On Groundhog's Day, a gorgeous sunny day, blue house greenhouse farm underwent some serious changes. Great changes, done by some really great people! Thank you to those great people- Jeff, Brian, Laura, Mollie, Kim, Wynne, Jennie, David, Nathan, Bobby, Carrie, and Abby-thank you, thank you, thank you! We did so much!! We made potting soil and started seeds in the greenhouse-a variety of lettuce, kale, chard, collards, and onions. We built washing and packing tables for harvested vegetables and a shelter for those tables (previously we had a pop-up tent and crappy folding tables). And we spread mulch, cleared blackberries, and enjoyed the day! We want to give a super special thanks to Laura and Brian who brought a delicious lunch-homemade chili and cornbread-for everyone! What a day, we couldn't have asked for a better one. Look below for photos and come by sometime and check out the changes!

We aren't spending too much time at the farm these days. It's the time of year where we stay inside, make big plans, look at seed catalogs, and stay warm. Good thing, too-it's so cold out there! Portland and much of the Willamette Valley is experiencing and inversion; when cold air is trapped below warmer air. You can read more here. These are photos from yesterday morning--frosty!

We also wanted to let you know that some of our big plans could involve you!
2012 was quite a good year-full of delicious harvests, incredible volunteers, wonderful subscribers and customers, farm stands, transplanted bees, blisters, water woes and water found, local construction, striped roman tomatoes (my new favorite), pickles, shared recipes, weeds, slugs, planting and
replanting, and on and on.

And now 2013! The biggest news so far is that my friend, Devin, will be my farm business partner! In case some of you are concerned, Jeff is still my partner in life (thank goodness), but has always been busy with his own work and now school! I've decided to ask Devin to join me with Blue House Greenhouse Farm because one of the countless things I've learned in the past couple years with this farm is that I enjoy working with other people! I do get to work with really great volunteers, but for the day to day decision making it's been pretty much on my own. I appreciate the mutual support and accountability that comes with a partnership. I am excited about what we can create together and learn from each other. Let me introduce you to Devin here, but I hope to be able to introduce him to you soon in person!
Hellos to all the Blue House Greenhouse friends and customers,

Amanda has asked me to join the team this year on the farm, so it's time once again for a quick bio about the farmio. (Not sure if farmio is a real word, but i imagine it could mean a person who is a farming enthusiast, and who perhaps wears tennis shoes in the fields.)
My name is Devin Dinihanian. I've been working on farms of various natures for about 4 and a half years. I first became active in the agricultural world while working with at-risk youth in downtown Portland, where I facilitated a farm to shelter partnership between a local farm and our day drop-in program. We would bring in veggies each week and use them in cooking workshops that would then feed the hungry participants. It was a great program and instilled in me the desire to learn more about farming as a tool to build community, so I started working and apprenticing with CSA's, educational farms, small scale urban farm projects and permaculture organizations that worked with sustenance farmers in rural communities. I spent a few years working on farms and health ngo's in New York, Vermont, Oaxaca state in Mexico and finally back in Portland. After working with a farm on Skyline Ridge and with my good friend Danny who farms up in Ridgefield, Washington (so many ridges around here, right?) I started working with low income families as a member of Growing Gardens, a rad organization who you should check out if you aren't already familiar. We help folks around the Portland-Gresham area to build and tend to their own backyard and school gardens. Its a great feeling to help people learn to grow their own food. Such a great feeling that I was very excited when Amanda asked me to work with her at the farm this year. I look forward to getting back into the soil and growing food for all of the loyal customers Amanda has told me all about, (you all sound so nice).

Thanks for all the support you've already given to the blue house greenhouse, and I look forward to meeting you all sometime this year.
